How to use Endless OS

If you enter the wrong password at login, an option will be displayed to show the password hint you entered during the initial setup of Endless OS. If the hint doesn't help you, follow the first set of instructions below that applies to you.

If you bought a computer directly from Endless, or are running Endless OS 2.6

Please contact Include a contact phone number, country and the best time to contact you. After confirming your identity, we can help you reset your password.

  1. Click the area where the volume and internet signal icons are located
  2. Click on "All Settings..."
  3. Under System, select the Users icon
  4. Click on Unlock at the top right corner of the dialog box, and when prompted enter your password
  5. Click, "Add User" on the top right corner
  6. Fill in the user account details. You can set a standard account or an administrative account, but keep in mind that only the administrative account is allowed to make changes to the whole system

Your user account lets you customize your experience with Endless. In your user account, you can change settings like your desktop background, organize your own folders, and save your files. Any internet browsing history and passwords are also managed by your user account. You can create multiple user accounts so that everyone who uses the computer is able to customize their own settings.

There are two types of user accounts - Standard and Administrator. An administrator has more powers than a standard user. For example, an administrator can create and delete other user accounts, install and delete applications, configure wireless networks and printers, and control settings that affect all user accounts. A standard account cannot perform these tasks without providing an administrator's password. The first account you create when you turn on your computer for the first time will be an administrative account, and you must always have at least one administrative account. Changes to accounts, including adding additional users, are accomplished via the Users section of Settings.

There is also a special standard account named "Shared Account" that is created by default. This account has no password, and is intended for families that have multiple users sharing the computer. Browser cookies, passwords, and history are cleared upon logging out, in order to provide some level of privacy among multiple users of this shared account. Any other files stored on the shared account are saved upon logging out and are accessible to anyone else who logs in to the shared account. This account can be deleted if desired from the Users section of Settings, but once deleted there is no mechanism to recreate it.

Other than the shared account, all accounts are required to have a password. However, one account may be configured for automatic login, in which case that account will automatically log in upon restarting the computer without asking for the user to enter a password. If you log in automatically, though, you may be asked for your password at a later time to perform administrative tasks, so you will still need to remember your password. An administrator can reset passwords for other users via the user settings, but external technical support may be necessary if the administrator forgets his/her password.

To install a printer in Endless OS follow these steps:

Via USB Cable:

Connect the USB cable from your printer to one of the USB ports on your computer.

The recognition should be automatic and once the installation is complete, a notification will appear stating that the printer is ready for use.

Via network:

Networked printers (via Ethernet or Wi-Fi) can be found and installed as follows:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Printers
  3. Click on the padlock in the upper right corner to enable the option to modify
  4. Press the "+" button located on the lower left side of the window
  5. A window with the message "Add a new printer" will appear. The system will search the printer on the network.
  6. When it appears, click on "Add" and add it to start with the installation.

Note: Make sure your printer is turned on, connected and configured to the internet. In some cases installing a printer might involve downloading and installing the driver from, which is a process that EndlessOS manages automatically for printers having available drivers. If this is your case, you just need to confirm the download in case the driver does not come with the free license

Endless supports many common models of printers, scanners and 3G/4G dongles. Some models may require Internet access to download drivers.

If you have questions about a specific model, please contact our customer support team at

There are more than 700 drivers for printers that work on Endless OS. To verify if your printer is compatible, go to this web page. You will find the option to select the Brand and Model. If your printer appears on the list, you will be able to use it with our OS.

Read How do I install a printer to this computer?

Sometimes a driver's printer is compatible with others in the same brand series.

Please consider that there are several printers not compatible with Endless OS, this is due to the fact that their developers did not create the software for Linux or there is a bug that we require to fix. If you are having difficulties with the installation, follow this steps:

  • Press "Alt+F2", this will open a window
  • Write "eos-diagnostics" and press "Enter"
  • The command will create a file that will be saved inside the "Home" folder (Documents->Home).

Please share it to The log will help us to have a better understanding of the issue.

The Internet is not required to run Endless. Most of the apps that come pre-installed, you can use without going online.

Here are some things that you don't need the internet for:

Reading: we have lots of apps like Encyclopedia or Cooking that provide things for you to read or look up. These come preloaded with reading material so that you don't need to access the internet.

News (Spanish and Portuguese only): we have apps that come pre-loaded with news articles from well-known newspapers. You need an internet connection from time to time, to get fresh news, but once you have downloaded it you can read it offline.

Games: You don’t need the internet to play the games that come with your computer, but if you want to play games online you’ll need an internet connection.

Here are some apps that do require an internet connection:

  • Browser (Chromium, Chrome, Firefox)
  • Content center
  • Weather
  • Website links on the desktop

The easiest way to set up your WiFi is by following the instructions on the screen when you first turn on your computer. If you need to set up a new WiFi network later, or make changes to your existing WiFi network, just follow these simple steps:

1.Look for the network icon on the bottom right corner of your screen, on the toolbar. If you have WiFi, the icon looks like this   If you do not have a connection, it will look like this

2.Click on the icon you see.

3.Make sure your WiFi is turned on. The switch to the right of the word WiFi should be blue:  means ON, and  means OFF. If the switch is not blue, click on the switch to turn it on.

4.Next, select your WiFi network from the list of available networks. Enter your network password in the dialog box. Remember, this password may be different than the password you use to log in to your Endless computer.

NOTE: If your password isn’t working, be sure you have selected the right network. Your friends or neighbors may have the same network name you do, and it’s possible that your computer is picking up their network signal instead of yours.

5.If you don’t see your network in the list of available networks, try restarting your WiFi device. If it still doesn’t work, you may need to contact your internet provider directly.

6.If you need to make more advanced changes to your internet settings, click on Network Settings at the bottom of the WiFi menu. That will open a separate window where you can specify more things related to your internet configuration.

1. Look for the internet icon at the bottom right corner of your screen, on the toolbar. You’ll see one of these icons

   WiFi is connected

   Ethernet is connected

   No internet connection

2. Test your internet by opening your browser and typing in a website, such as Hit Enter on your keyboard. If you are not connected to the internet, you will see an error message. If this happens, try turning off your computer’s WiFi and turning it on again, or unplugging your ethernet cable and plugging it back in. You may also want to try turning off your home’s WiFi device, waiting 15 seconds, then turning it on again.

Endless OS uses OSTree, a non-destructive and atomic technique to deploy operating system updates. That means updates can be installed without affecting the running state of the system, making the process safe and robust from environmental factors such as a sudden power loss.

When connected to the internet with WiFi or ethernet, Endless OS will periodically check if updates are available, and if so, will proceed to automatically download and apply them in the background. The user will receive a notification when the machine is ready to be restarted.

The check for updates can also be triggered manually from the App Center.

Endless OS uses OSTree, a non-destructive and atomic technique to deploy operating system updates. That means updates can be installed without affecting the running state of the system, making the process safe and robust from environmental factors such as a sudden power loss.

After an upgrade, one previous version of the OS is kept on your computer. This makes it possible to roll back to the old version if there is a problem with the new version. Endless OS uses OSTree to deploy operating system upgrades. With OSTree, keeping a previous version of the OS does not double the disk space used: only the differences between the two versions need to be stored. For minor upgrades (such as 3.4.0 to 3.4.1) the difference is typically only a few megabytes. For major upgrades (such as 3.3.17 to 3.4.0) the difference is much larger, but the ability to roll back to the old version is even more valuable.

If you are very short of disk space after a major upgrade, you can remove the previous version by opening a Terminal window and running this command:

sudo ostree admin undeploy 1

This will last until the next time an OS upgrade is available.

There are a few different ways to change your desktop background. If you have a picture open that you would like to use, simply right click the picture. A menu will pop up, select Set as Wallpaper.

Another option is to right-click directly on the desktop or by going to Settings->Personal->Background. From the menu, select Change Background. A dialog box will open and you should click on the box that says Background. That will open a separate dialog box, where you can choose a new image to set as your wallpaper. Move between the options at the top to find the image you’re looking for. You can choose between one of the pre-loaded wallpaper options, one of your own pictures, or a color. Double click the image you would like to use and your desktop background will update instantly.

Finally, you can change your background in Settings.Click the Endless logo icon at the bottom left hand of the screen.

The Endless logo icon looks like this:

Once a user moves or renames anything on his/her desktop, that user now maintains his/her own copy of the icon grid layout, so any changes we make to the default do not impact existing users.

But, if the user gets a first OS update before moving anything he/she will get any new layout from the newest EOS versions.

They are too many to list them here! A list of system-level keyboard shortcuts can be accessed by selecting the Keyboard panel in the Settings app. It’s also possible to customize most of the system-level shortcuts from the same panel. Applications also might have keyboard shortcuts; please refer to the documentation of each application to discover them.

Unlike most Linux-based operating systems, Endless OS is write-protected, and can only be modified by the Endless OS updater. Endless only allows software to be installed using Flatpak, which means it is run inside a sandbox and has limited access to the rest of the system. By default, Endless OS only allows Flatpaks to be installed from specific trusted sources (Endless and the GNOME project) so it's unlikely that you will accidentally install something bad or malicious.

Viruses designed for Microsoft Windows and most other systems will not run on Endless OS. As a result, you do not need anti-virus software on Endless OS.

1. First, be sure your Bluetooth device is switched on.

2. Next, click on the Bluetooth icon at the bottom right corner of your screen, on the toolbar. The Bluetooth icon looks like this

3. Be sure that Bluetooth and Visibility are turned on. There are switches with status symbols:   means ON, and    means OFF. When the switch is ON, it will turn blue.

4. Select Set Up a New Device… to connect a new Bluetooth device to your computer.

5. A separate dialog box called Device Search will open. Your Bluetooth device should appear in the list of devices in the dialog box.

6. Select the device you are trying to connect and click Next.

The device should now be successfully connected. If the connection fails, try turning the device and Bluetooth and Visibility settings off and on, and then try connecting again.

Once the computer is connected to the Internet, Endless OS receives minor updates and fixes every month. In addition, it receives most relevant updates every 4-6 months.

When an update happens, a notification will appear in the taskbar.

Note: consider that updates are not the same for the Endless OS and the App Center since they have a different platform.

You can also manually check for available updates:

Our mission is to have as many people as possible enjoy the benefit of Endless OS, so we have made it available as a free download, and have pre-installed the following free-of-patent video codecs:

  • OGG Vorbis (.ogg)
  • OGG Theora
  • VP8/VP9 (.webm)
  • PCM (.wav)
  • MP3 (.mp3)

Unfortunately, some other video formats have patents and are not free, so we do not pre-install them on the free version of Endless OS. Starting from Endless OS version 3.0, Endless OS supports the ability to purchase and install new codecs that can support playback of the following media:

  • Most .mov / .mp4 / .m4a files (MPEG 4 video and AC3/MP3 audio decoders)
  • Most .avi / .divx (H.264 video and AAC audio)
  • Web sites with embedded HTML5 video and audio content (Youtube, Netflix, etc)

Please see here for “how to purchase and install codecs”.

Note: Although computers with Intel, AMD or other X86 CPU can support Netflix after installing the codec upgrade, Endless Mini and other computers with ARM CPUs can’t support Netflix due to digital rights management.

Yes, you can listen to songs stored locally on your hard drive with the Music app, which is located on your desktop. Click on the icon once to open it. When the Music app loads, you will see some songs that already come with your computer. You can add as many songs as you like from your own collection, or by downloading more from the internet.

To add the music to the Music app, first make sure that you have already copied your songs to a folder on your computer, or that you have a device plugged in (like a USB or external hard drive), that has the songs on it. Then, just click on the settings icon in the Music app which is at the top right-hand corner, and then select the “Add Music” button. Select the folder where you have your songs, and upload them to the Music app.

If you have an internet connection, you can also stream music from radio stations on the internet, YouTube, or use web apps like Spotify that come preloaded on Endless.

Since version 3.0, Endless OS has included the ability to purchase and install a new codec to support more audio formats.  Please see here for more details.

Yes, it’s easy to view and edit your photos using Endless!

To view your photos, you should first locate them within your “Documents” folder, which is located on your desktop. Your photos may be found in the “Pictures” section of the file viewer, or within one of the other folders there. If you know the name of your photo, you can search for it using the search tool at the top of your Documents folder.

Once you have located your photos on your computer, you can double-click on them to view them in the default Photo Viewer app.

If you want to edit your photos, you can open the Photo Editor app that is also located on your desktop. Click on the app once and then choose a picture you want to edit. You can use one of the photos that come with your computer, or a photo that you have taken and uploaded. The Photo Editor app lets you add filters, crop, and transform your pictures into even more awesome keepsakes!

You can also use the GIMP or Inkscape application to install images.

No, Endless is a Linux-based operating system and does not support Windows apps. However, most of the types of apps you find on a Windows (or Mac) operating system are on Endless and we will continue adding more in the near future.

If you have a favorite app that you can't find on Endless OS, let us know on our community forum. There may be something similar that we can recommend for you, or your suggestion might end up influencing our Product Roadmap.

Note: Starting from version 3.0, you can install Endless OS alongside Windows so that you can use any Windows applications that you can’t find on Endless. Please click here for details.

Limitation: This FAQ applies to version 3.0 or higher.

Endless OS versions 3.0 and newer will support applications from other publishers by using a new application bundling system called Flatpak (

If you have a favorite app that you can't find on Endless OS, let us know on the community forum. There may be something similar that we can recommend for you, or your suggestion might end up influencing our Product Roadmap.

At present, the App Center will only show apps from Endless, but advanced users can follow the instructions on to manually install 3rd party runtimes and applications.

At present, there is no dedicated FTP app (like Filezilla) for Endless OS. But don't worry! The built-in Documents app has FTP support. Here's how to use it:

1. Open Documents by clicking the icon on your desktop
2. Click "Other Locations" in the sidebar

3. Enter the FTP server address, starting with ftp://, into the box labelled "Connect to Server", then click "Connect"

4. Enter your username and password, if necessary, then click "Connect"

5. You have now connected to the FTP server. You can drag files in and out of this window to download and upload them. When you're finished, click the Eject button beside the FTP server in the sidebar.

Endless OS comes with more than 100 apps installed, covering a variety of subjects, and most of them do not require an internet connection. However, we know that people want to do lots of different things with their computers, more than we can fit into the version that you get on your computer or download so we have the Endless OS App Center directly on your home screen to get new apps.

The Endless OS App Center comes pre-configured to install additional apps provided by Endless and external and 3rd party developers using the Flathub project. Flathub uses the Flatpak, app distribution system to run apps safely and securely on a number of different Linux systems. Any developer can add their application to Flathub and have it show up in the Endless App Center.

For advanced users it's possible to install Flatpak apps from other sources, as well, the Flatpak web site has instructions for how to add more app sources, and how to install Flatpak apps directly from the command line. Flatpak is a new technology, with more apps becoming available all the time. If your favourite app is not yet available as a Flatpak, ask its developers to consider it, so it can be easily installed on Endless OS and other Linux distributions.

Limitation: This FAQ applies to version 3.0 or higher.

In order to watch Netflix and some YouTube videos, you must have H.264 codec support.

On computers with Intel, AMD or other x86-64 CPUs: from Endless OS 3.0.7 onwards, you can install Google Chrome from the App Center. Netflix and YouTube should work fully in Google Chrome. Depending on when you first installed Endless OS, it may already be your default browser.

On the Endless Mini or other computers with ARM CPUs: YouTube should work fully in the built-in browser but Netflix is not supported due to digital rights management.

Endless is compatible with some of Microsoft’s most popular applications, like Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, but it is unable to run any of those applications directly. Instead, the LibreOffice suite provides a similar experience, for free.

Some of the more advanced features may not be completely preserved, so before you move your Microsoft Office files to your Endless computer, be sure to save a backup of the originals in case any data is lost in the file conversion.

There are a lot of apps that are already installed on your computer or are easy to install if you have an internet connection. To find more apps that you can use, click on the More Apps icon on your desktop. This will open the App Center.

You can browse through the App Center’s categories to find new apps. Once you’ve found an app you’d like, click on it and then click on the green Add to Desktop button. Some apps in the App Center will require an internet connection for you to download and install them, and you’ll find an Install App button next to them instead of the green Add to Desktop button. If you have an internet connection, just click on the Install App button, and your app will download and install so you can add it to your desktop.

Unfortunately, you cannot install Linux apps directly from the internet - you can only add apps that are already in our App Center. We often add new apps, so please check the App Center after system updates to find new apps you can use.

In addition to the apps on your computer, if you have an internet connection, you can use many additional web apps. Explore the Discovery Center through your internet browser for inspiration!

If you have a favorite app that you can't find on Endless OS, let us know on our Community. There may be something similar that we can recommend for you, or your suggestion might end up influencing our Product Roadmap.

When you have internet access, your Endless OS can function as a tool to talk to people in many ways. Just follow a few simple steps:

On your Desktop, click on the Social folder to find some pre-installed apps that let you talk to others. Skype is a great app to use if you’re also interested in video chatting. Keep in mind that you will need speakers or headphones, a microphone, and a video camera in order to use your computer as a phone or for video chatting.

If you are unable to find Skype in the Social folder, search for Skype in the global search bar at the top of your Desktop and click on it to open. If you are unable to locate Skype through the global search,

it is likely due to the fact that the app has not yet been installed on your computer. You will need to download & install the app before using it by going to More Apps and installing from there.

Once installed, you can simply click on the Skype app and talk to your friends & family whenever you please.

In the same way, you can find Slack or Whatsapp.
