How to use Endless OS

If you enter the wrong password at login, an option will be displayed to show the password hint you entered during the initial setup of Endless OS. If the hint doesn't help you, follow the first set of instructions below that applies to you.

If you bought a computer directly from Endless, or are running Endless OS 2.6

Please contact Include a contact phone number, country and the best time to contact you. After confirming your identity, we can help you reset your password.

  1. Click the area where the volume and internet signal icons are located
  2. Click on "All Settings..."
  3. Under System, select the Users icon
  4. Click on Unlock at the top right corner of the dialog box, and when prompted enter your password
  5. Click, "Add User" on the top right corner
  6. Fill in the user account details. You can set a standard account or an administrative account, but keep in mind that only the administrative account is allowed to make changes to the whole system

Your user account lets you customize your experience with Endless. In your user account, you can change settings like your desktop background, organize your own folders, and save your files. Any internet browsing history and passwords are also managed by your user account. You can create multiple user accounts so that everyone who uses the computer is able to customize their own settings.

There are two types of user accounts - Standard and Administrator. An administrator has more powers than a standard user. For example, an administrator can create and delete other user accounts, install and delete applications, configure wireless networks and printers, and control settings that affect all user accounts. A standard account cannot perform these tasks without providing an administrator's password. The first account you create when you turn on your computer for the first time will be an administrative account, and you must always have at least one administrative account. Changes to accounts, including adding additional users, are accomplished via the Users section of Settings.

There is also a special standard account named "Shared Account" that is created by default. This account has no password, and is intended for families that have multiple users sharing the computer. Browser cookies, passwords, and history are cleared upon logging out, in order to provide some level of privacy among multiple users of this shared account. Any other files stored on the shared account are saved upon logging out and are accessible to anyone else who logs in to the shared account. This account can be deleted if desired from the Users section of Settings, but once deleted there is no mechanism to recreate it.

Other than the shared account, all accounts are required to have a password. However, one account may be configured for automatic login, in which case that account will automatically log in upon restarting the computer without asking for the user to enter a password. If you log in automatically, though, you may be asked for your password at a later time to perform administrative tasks, so you will still need to remember your password. An administrator can reset passwords for other users via the user settings, but external technical support may be necessary if the administrator forgets his/her password.

To install a printer in Endless OS follow these steps:

Via USB Cable:

Connect the USB cable from your printer to one of the USB ports on your computer.

The recognition should be automatic and once the installation is complete, a notification will appear stating that the printer is ready for use.

Via network:

Networked printers (via Ethernet or Wi-Fi) can be found and installed as follows:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Printers
  3. Click on the padlock in the upper right corner to enable the option to modify
  4. Press the "+" button located on the lower left side of the window
  5. A window with the message "Add a new printer" will appear. The system will search the printer on the network.
  6. When it appears, click on "Add" and add it to start with the installation.

Note: Make sure your printer is turned on, connected and configured to the internet. In some cases installing a printer might involve downloading and installing the driver from, which is a process that EndlessOS manages automatically for printers having available drivers. If this is your case, you just need to confirm the download in case the driver does not come with the free license

Endless supports many common models of printers, scanners and 3G/4G dongles. Some models may require Internet access to download drivers.

If you have questions about a specific model, please contact our customer support team at

There are more than 700 drivers for printers that work on Endless OS. To verify if your printer is compatible, go to this web page. You will find the option to select the Brand and Model. If your printer appears on the list, you will be able to use it with our OS.

Read How do I install a printer to this computer?

Sometimes a driver's printer is compatible with others in the same brand series.

Please consider that there are several printers not compatible with Endless OS, this is due to the fact that their developers did not create the software for Linux or there is a bug that we require to fix. If you are having difficulties with the installation, follow this steps:

  • Press "Alt+F2", this will open a window
  • Write "eos-diagnostics" and press "Enter"
  • The command will create a file that will be saved inside the "Home" folder (Documents->Home).

Please share it to The log will help us to have a better understanding of the issue.

The Internet is not required to run Endless. Most of the apps that come pre-installed, you can use without going online.

Here are some things that you don't need the internet for:

Reading: we have lots of apps like Encyclopedia or Cooking that provide things for you to read or look up. These come preloaded with reading material so that you don't need to access the internet.

News (Spanish and Portuguese only): we have apps that come pre-loaded with news articles from well-known newspapers. You need an internet connection from time to time, to get fresh news, but once you have downloaded it you can read it offline.

Games: You don’t need the internet to play the games that come with your computer, but if you want to play games online you’ll need an internet connection.

Here are some apps that do require an internet connection:

  • Browser (Chromium, Chrome, Firefox)
  • Content center
  • Weather
  • Website links on the desktop

The easiest way to set up your WiFi is by following the instructions on the screen when you first turn on your computer. If you need to set up a new WiFi network later, or make changes to your existing WiFi network, just follow these simple steps:

1.Look for the network icon on the bottom right corner of your screen, on the toolbar. If you have WiFi, the icon looks like this   If you do not have a connection, it will look like this

2.Click on the icon you see.

3.Make sure your WiFi is turned on. The switch to the right of the word WiFi should be blue:  means ON, and  means OFF. If the switch is not blue, click on the switch to turn it on.

4.Next, select your WiFi network from the list of available networks. Enter your network password in the dialog box. Remember, this password may be different than the password you use to log in to your Endless computer.

NOTE: If your password isn’t working, be sure you have selected the right network. Your friends or neighbors may have the same network name you do, and it’s possible that your computer is picking up their network signal instead of yours.

5.If you don’t see your network in the list of available networks, try restarting your WiFi device. If it still doesn’t work, you may need to contact your internet provider directly.

6.If you need to make more advanced changes to your internet settings, click on Network Settings at the bottom of the WiFi menu. That will open a separate window where you can specify more things related to your internet configuration.

1. Look for the internet icon at the bottom right corner of your screen, on the toolbar. You’ll see one of these icons

   WiFi is connected

   Ethernet is connected

   No internet connection

2. Test your internet by opening your browser and typing in a website, such as Hit Enter on your keyboard. If you are not connected to the internet, you will see an error message. If this happens, try turning off your computer’s WiFi and turning it on again, or unplugging your ethernet cable and plugging it back in. You may also want to try turning off your home’s WiFi device, waiting 15 seconds, then turning it on again.

Endless OS uses OSTree, a non-destructive and atomic technique to deploy operating system updates. That means updates can be installed without affecting the running state of the system, making the process safe and robust from environmental factors such as a sudden power loss.

When connected to the internet with WiFi or ethernet, Endless OS will periodically check if updates are available, and if so, will proceed to automatically download and apply them in the background. The user will receive a notification when the machine is ready to be restarted.

The check for updates can also be triggered manually from the App Center.

Endless OS uses OSTree, a non-destructive and atomic technique to deploy operating system updates. That means updates can be installed without affecting the running state of the system, making the process safe and robust from environmental factors such as a sudden power loss.

After an upgrade, one previous version of the OS is kept on your computer. This makes it possible to roll back to the old version if there is a problem with the new version. Endless OS uses OSTree to deploy operating system upgrades. With OSTree, keeping a previous version of the OS does not double the disk space used: only the differences between the two versions need to be stored. For minor upgrades (such as 3.4.0 to 3.4.1) the difference is typically only a few megabytes. For major upgrades (such as 3.3.17 to 3.4.0) the difference is much larger, but the ability to roll back to the old version is even more valuable.

If you are very short of disk space after a major upgrade, you can remove the previous version by opening a Terminal window and running this command:

sudo ostree admin undeploy 1

This will last until the next time an OS upgrade is available.

There are a few different ways to change your desktop background. If you have a picture open that you would like to use, simply right click the picture. A menu will pop up, select Set as Wallpaper.

Another option is to right-click directly on the desktop or by going to Settings->Personal->Background. From the menu, select Change Background. A dialog box will open and you should click on the box that says Background. That will open a separate dialog box, where you can choose a new image to set as your wallpaper. Move between the options at the top to find the image you’re looking for. You can choose between one of the pre-loaded wallpaper options, one of your own pictures, or a color. Double click the image you would like to use and your desktop background will update instantly.

Finally, you can change your background in Settings.Click the Endless logo icon at the bottom left hand of the screen.

The Endless logo icon looks like this:

Once a user moves or renames anything on his/her desktop, that user now maintains his/her own copy of the icon grid layout, so any changes we make to the default do not impact existing users.

But, if the user gets a first OS update before moving anything he/she will get any new layout from the newest EOS versions.

They are too many to list them here! A list of system-level keyboard shortcuts can be accessed by selecting the Keyboard panel in the Settings app. It’s also possible to customize most of the system-level shortcuts from the same panel. Applications also might have keyboard shortcuts; please refer to the documentation of each application to discover them.

Unlike most Linux-based operating systems, Endless OS is write-protected, and can only be modified by the Endless OS updater. Endless only allows software to be installed using Flatpak, which means it is run inside a sandbox and has limited access to the rest of the system. By default, Endless OS only allows Flatpaks to be installed from specific trusted sources (Endless and the GNOME project) so it's unlikely that you will accidentally install something bad or malicious.

Viruses designed for Microsoft Windows and most other systems will not run on Endless OS. As a result, you do not need anti-virus software on Endless OS.

1. First, be sure your Bluetooth device is switched on.

2. Next, click on the Bluetooth icon at the bottom right corner of your screen, on the toolbar. The Bluetooth icon looks like this

3. Be sure that Bluetooth and Visibility are turned on. There are switches with status symbols:   means ON, and    means OFF. When the switch is ON, it will turn blue.

4. Select Set Up a New Device… to connect a new Bluetooth device to your computer.

5. A separate dialog box called Device Search will open. Your Bluetooth device should appear in the list of devices in the dialog box.

6. Select the device you are trying to connect and click Next.

The device should now be successfully connected. If the connection fails, try turning the device and Bluetooth and Visibility settings off and on, and then try connecting again.

Once the computer is connected to the Internet, Endless OS receives minor updates and fixes every month. In addition, it receives most relevant updates every 4-6 months.

When an update happens, a notification will appear in the taskbar.

Note: consider that updates are not the same for the Endless OS and the App Center since they have a different platform.

You can also manually check for available updates:
